The Holy Ghost Care Home

In 2015 Halley Murphy & Associates were engaged to design a proposal to renovate and extend The Holy Ghost Residential Home, Cork Road, Waterford.

The existing building was a 60-bed residential home providing care for older adults from the local community. The original structure was constructed in the early 1970s, this section formed a continuous rectangle around a central courtyard. A connecting ‘cross’ shaped extension was then added circa 1994.

The development consisted of a single storey extension to 34 no. existing bedrooms in 8 blocks, provision of a new single storey bedroom wing comprising 5 no. bedrooms, staff room, and ancillary works. The project also involved substantial alterations to internal bedroom configurations in order to provide each bedroom with an individual ensuite. This was effectively the primary aspiration for the project; to replace the outdated common bathroom facilities with the provision of individual ensuite bedrooms to current HIQA standards.
